I took up fly-fishing shortly after moving to Fair Oaks. Initially, it was driving over to Arcalarius Ranch to meet up with some old friends from my fraternity to fish the upper Owens but I soon discovered the E and W Carson, the Upper American and Silver Fork and of course the American River that runs through Sacramento. Then it was getting off to Colorado and Utah and Wyoming and Yellowstone and Idaho. Flyfishing reminds me of golf in so many ways, it's very technical and you have to master the casting and presentation techniques but you also have to read the water and figure out where fish are located. Patience is important and having the right gear . . . waders, rods, reels, flies, etc. In San Luis Obispo, I've joined the Santa Lucia Fly Fishers - mostly ocean fly fishing but several trips to the Sierras happen each year.

One of my favorite trips was to Alaska where we floated the Kukatlik River (part of the Goodnews system) for 9 days and camped fishing for silver salmon. That was a real education in fishing for larger than trout fish on big flies. I believe in using guide services when possible. I don't have much interest in fishing lakes or oceans . . . don't know why other than I really like to have the water running by me.
